Dear 4-H Members, Leaders & Parents:

 

August is almost here!  For everyone in 4-H this also means FAIR TIME and FUN! Projects will have to be finished, meetings will have to be attended, and record books must be completed.  All of this is just part of participating in a county fair.

 

Another very important part of participating in a county fair is the pride of accomplishment and the new friendships that are made.  Be sure to congratulate those who have a top project, let everyone know what a great job they did, and remember that every 4-H’er who is competing at the Fair is a winner!

 

The 15th Annual Green Swing will be held on Friday evening of the Fair, August 17th.  The dance will be in the Agee Building at the conclusion of the crowning of the royalty.  Check out the green flyer inside this newsletter for more information.

 

In this newsletter you will also find a white postcard for you to use to nominate the 4-H Leader of your choice for the Distinguished Service Awards.  Simply write the name of the leader you would like to nominate on the postcard and mail it by August 3rd.

 

If you see a Fair Board member during the Fair, be sure to let them know how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to the Fair and the 4-H program.   It is because of their good management that we are all able to enjoy such a nice Fair.

FRIENDS OF 4-h AWARDS

 

The Friends of 4-H Fund was established in 1996 to recognize outstanding achievement in Family & Consumer Science projects.  Through generous donations from friends of the 4-H program, we have been able to give these lifetime achievement awards to very deserving 4-H members.

 

· 4-Hers who are enrolled in their 5th year or more of clothing construction projects, and will be entering at least their sophomore year in high school, are eligible to compete for the Clothing Creativity Award.  This year’s winner will receive a sewing machine.

 

· 4-Hers who are in their 5th year or more of foods projects and will be entering at least their sophomore year in high school, are eligible for the Foods Award.  The winner will receive an upright mixer.

 

·  4-Hers who are in their 5th year or more of Making the Most of Me, have completed all four Phases , and will be entering at least their Junior year in high school are eligible for the Making the Most of Me Award.  The winner will receive a  set of luggage.

 

· Applications for the awards are available at the Extension Office.  All applications are due on  Monday, August  13th at the Fair Office. 

 

 

 

  

ENTERING 4-H PROJECTS

 

Clothing and Making the Most of Me: 

All clothing projects need to be entered Monday August 1 3th  at 10:00 a.m. when you come for fashion judging.  At registration, your garments and record books will be checked in.  Be sure to have a picture of you in your outfit for the photo display card which you can get from your leader or pick up at registration.  Don’t forget to bring an entire outfit to dress your mannequin.  You will only be judged on your project garment, but this keeps our mannequins from “going nude”.

 

 4-H Foods and Specialty Projects: 

(Including Club Secretary Books & Vet Science Projects) You may enter foods and specialty projects on Tuesday evening, August 1 4th, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. or on Wednesday morning from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the 4-H building.   Project labels need to be put on  any project items that do not already have your name on them.  Project labels will be available when you enter your projects.  Record books and manuals do not need labels, just the actual projects. However, be sure to write your name on your manual cover.

 

 4-H Animal Record Books: 

Rabbit, Poultry and Dog record books : due in the Fair Office by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug.  15th.  

Vet Science project books: to be turned in with the Specialty projects on  Wednesday morning.   

Beef, Dairy, Swine, Sheep, Goat record books: 

Leaders are to gather their club’s record books, sign them and turn them in to the Fair Office by 9:00 a.m. Thursday, August  16th.  No books will be accepted that are not signed. 

 

Club Community Service Posters

Your club already does a community service project, so all you need to do is take a few pictures and make a poster explaining what you did – that’s it!  Your poster needs to be on a full (vertical) sheet of poster board (22”x28”) so that it will fit in the display area.  This year we are also celebrating the 4-H 100th Anniversary by doing 100 hours of community service.  Club Leaders  -  don’t forget to turn in your club member’s handprints to the Extension Office By August 1st!  This will be a fun display at the Fair!

 

 

 

 

 

 

4-H Fashion Show

Practice & Judging

Monday, August 1 3th

 

As in previous years the 4-H Fashion Show Judging & Practice will be held on Monday of fair week.  All

 4-Hers who plan to participate in this year’s 4-H Fashion Show must attend both the judging & practice session on Monday the 1 3th and the public show on Wednesday the  15th.  The schedule for Monday’s judging & practice is as follows:

 

 9:30 a.m.  Modeling workshop with Fashion Board for first year models and those who would like more practice

modeling before judging.  This session is highly recommended for first year members.

 

 10:00 a.m. Registration for all fashion show participants. Everyone needs to be registered by  10:15 a.m.

 

 10: 15 a.m.  Orientation for everyone.

 

 10: 3 0 a.m.  Judging of Models Begins  

 

 11:30-12: 0 0 p.m.  Display workshop with Fashion Board  in 4-H Building.  Everyone must attend to learn how to dress their mannequins.

 

Lunch  is on your own as time permits.  Bring a sack lunch  -  no concession stands will be open.  A beverage will be provided. 

 

 12:30- 2: 0 0 p.m.  Fashion Show Practice

 

 2: 0 0 p.m. Additional time to dress mannequins-Making the Most of Me only or work on creative activity.

 

 4-Hers need to bring and model their completed outfits for the judging.  Please remember to also bring your creative activity item for the Monday session.

 

As usual, this will be a long day for all of us.  We accomplish a lot in a very short time period.  It is essential that 4-Hers plan on staying for the entire time!! 

 

Leaders and parents - if you are interested in helping  out with any of the fashion activities on Monday or Wednesday, please call the Extension Office. 

 

 

  

Public Fashion Show

Wednesday, August  15th 

 

We will follow the same procedure as previous years for the fashion show.

 

The 4-H Building will be open to the public at 4:00 to 6:15 p.m. after judging is completed. At 6:15 p.m. the 4-H Building will be closed so that all FEMALE models can change their clothes in that building.  MALE models may remove their clothing projects at 6:00 p.m. and change in the Arena Building bathroom.  Girls can take their curling irons, makeup, etc. to the  dressing room and continue to get ready there.

 

After the fashion show, you will need to immediately return to the 4-H building to put your clothing display back, just as you found it.  Please, look around and pick up all items you brought with you, like curling irons, mirrors, and hair brushes.

 

We will re-open the 4-H Building at 8:30 p.m. for public viewing, or as soon as all clothes are back and ready for display.  We want the building to look great!!

 

Three people are needed to help "behind the scenes" during the public fashion show.  If you or someone you know would be willing to help out, please contact the Extension Office.  

 

 

  

FASHION SHOW CREATIVE ACTIVITY 

 

In keeping with the Fair theme of “Exploring New Horizon’s at the Idaho County Fair”, the Fashion Board has chosen to work with a jungle theme for the Fashion Show.  For the Creative Activity each model needs to create a jungle animal face mask to wear.   

 

The creative activity is the opening number for the fashion show.  Any 4-H’er enrolled in a constructed clothing or Making The Most of Me project is encouraged to participate.  Anyone participating in the Fashion Show must attend practice on Monday, August 1 3th. 

 

 

 

SMALL ANIMAL SHOWS

RABBITS,  POULTRY & DOGS  

 

The  4-H Rabbit Show will begin at 9:30 a.m.  on Wednesday, August  15th in the Agee Livestock Pavilion.

 

The Dog Show will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 15th in the Agee Livestock Pavilion.

 

The Poultry Show will begin at  1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15th in the Agee Livestock Pavilion.

 

4-H members showing rabbits and poultry will be in the show ring for a Fitting & Showing Class with oldest members showing first.  Quality judging will take place at the cage. 

 

Rabbit, Poultry, and Dog Record Books need to be turned into the Fair Office by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 15th.   

 

 

 

 

Stall assignments

 

Stall assignments will be made for all beef, swine, sheep and goat projects.  Stall areas will be drawn out of a hat and assigned to each livestock club.  A listing will be posted at the Fair office, in the livestock barn and a copy will be mailed to the livestock leaders.  Please use the stalls designated for your club.

 

The barns will be open for decorating on Tuesday, August 14th, from 4:00  -  8:00 p.m.  Each club needs to bring their own decorating supplies (staple guns, tape, tack, etc.).  These items will not be available at the Fair office.

 

 

 

 

4-H Leaders, Members and Parents:

 

Just a couple of reminders as we get ready for the upcoming Fair.  Steer and heifer project members need to remember that cattle have to be tied in the barn with two ropes, a halter and a neck rope.  This is required and will cut down on the number of

animals getting loose, especially at night.

 

Also, hog project members need to remember when you bring your hog in to be weighed, it has to be clean.  If a hog in unloaded and is covered with mud and manure, the people weighing the animals will require you to take your pig to the wash rack to be washed before being weighed. 

 

Be considerate of the people weighing the animals.  They don’t like to handle filthy animals.  Have all the animals clean when you arrive at the Fair.

The Idaho County 4-H Program Council and the Idaho County 4-H Livestock Leaders want all of our 4-H’ers to look their best when they are in the show ring with their animals.  When you are in the ring for fitting & showing, quality, or selling your animal it’s important to represent your county, your club, and yourself to the best of your ability.

 

The dress code recommendation is as follows:  long pants or split skirt and a long sleeved, button/snap-up shirt, tucked in.  For safety reasons, sandals should not be worn while showing your animal.

 

With the support of parents and leaders we can all “Make the Best Better” by helping our 4-H’ers look sharp at the Idaho County Fair!

FAIR CAMPING AREA 

 

Are you planning to bring your camper to the Fair?  If so, here are a few things that you need to know. 

 

· There will be space reservations available only for the people who live in the outermost areas of the County, i.e. Elk City, Riggins and White Bird, Kooskia, Kamiah.  Call Fair Board member, Tony Schumacher at 962-2402 to make a reservation.   All other spaces are taken on a first come first serve basis.
 

· When you make your reservation, please indicate if you would like to be in the “quiet” section of the camping area. 

 

· Campers may be parked on the grounds beginning Saturday, August 1 1th at 7:00 a.m. There will be four marked spaces to show how the campers should be angled when parked.  If everyone follows the correct angle there will be more space for everyone and it will be much easier for everyone to park and pull out when ready to leave.

 

· Each post has water and electric hook-ups for 4 campers.  You need to bring your own hose and your own electrical cord. 

 

· There are no hookups for sewage in the camping area, however, an RV dump is located just outside the camp area entrance. 

 

· There will be a $ 3 0 fee for each camper.   This is a one time fee for using the space through the entire week of the Fair and is payable at the Fair office
during the Fair.

 

· The Fair Board has done a great job developing our camper area.  We are very fortunate to have such a nice facility.  If you are using this area, be courteous of those camping around you and respect everyone’s property.
 

· A tent area is available in the old baseball field area.  Tent campers may prefer to be in this area rather than the RV area. 

 

· Please remember  to drive slowly and carefully when you are in the camping area.  Tents  beside campers can be difficult to see after dark and always watch for small children playing in the area.
