AN OPEN LETTER TO 4-H PARENTS
The 2008 4-H year is off to a successful start. Enrollments are in and it appears that we have a record number of 4-Hers enrolled in 4-H this year.
The 4-H program in Idaho County is a success due to the efforts of volunteer leaders, parents and many other people. We take pride in conducting a program that helps kids develop skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.
Parental involvement in the program is essential for success. Helping the youngsters with their project is encouraged and welcomed however the key word is HELPING not DOING. Kids need help with their project, but parents must avoid doing all the work for them. Examples of helping may include giving advice on how to groom the animal while standing and watching the 4-Her work to fit the animal; holding the wash bucket while the 4-Her washes the animal and so on. When parents wash the steer while the
4-H member is nowhere in sight, the parent crosses the line and is doing all the work. Feeding the animal or clipping the entire animal for the 4-Her is another example of doing the work. Parents need to remember that 4-H is for kids. We have had our turn in 4-H now we need to stand back and let the kids have theirs.
4-H should be a family activity and we hope that it will stay that way. However, please keep in mind that the program is for kids.
I look forward to seeing and working with all of you at the various 4-H events and activities coming up in 2008.
Sincerely,
Jim Church
